Embracing Eco-Emotions: A Journey with Climate Café GR

August 5, 2024

In the heart of Grand Rapids, a unique initiative is blossoming, offering a sanctuary for those grappling with the profound emotions stirred by our changing climate. Welcome to Climate Café GR, a local chapter of the global network of Climate Cafés dedicated to exploring eco-emotions within a supportive, non-judgmental space.

What is a Climate Café?

A Climate Café is a welcoming, informal gathering designed to foster open conversations about climate change. These pop-up spaces can be found in various community settings, from parks to workplaces, and even online. They are inclusive by design, encouraging participation from everyone, regardless of their expertise or background. The goal is simple: to create a safe, accessible environment where individuals can share their feelings, discuss ideas, and inspire action on climate issues.

A Unique Experience in Grand Rapids

At Climate Café GR, co-facilitated by our very own Nancy Morales from the Environmental Justice team and local climate justice organizer Nate Rauh-Bieri, participants meet at different locations around the city. These gatherings are not primarily about discussing climate facts and figures; they delve into the emotional and psychological impacts of climate change. They center our lived experiences rather than policy discussions or action campaigns (as important as the latter are; there are already accessible avenues and communities for those).

Attending a Climate Café is grounding and deeply moving. We talk openly about our fears and hopes for the future, drawing our feelings, and sharing stories. This creative expression allows you to connect on a profound level. Some cafes are held outside, so you get to be surrounded by nature as well as community and feel a strong sense of belonging. It’s comforting to be with others who share the same concerns about how climate change affects humans, animals, and the environment. Recent cafes have taken place at Last Mile Cafe, MLK Park, Roberto Clemente Park, and Blandford Nature Center.

The Essence of Climate Café GR

Climate Café GR stands out as a model of community-led engagement. Here, the conversations are led by those who live, work, and play in Grand Rapids. This local focus helps root the discussions in our immediate environment, while still allowing for a broader, global perspective. The gatherings typically last 90 minutes to 2 hours and are designed to be relaxed and informal, free from political affiliations or profit motives.

Nancy Morales, our facilitator, ensures that each meeting is a safe, welcoming space. Nate’s role includes organizing the venue and fostering an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable to speak and be heard. This inclusivity is key to the success of Climate Cafés, as it encourages diverse perspectives and richer discussions. We have varying lived experiences when it comes to how we experience climate and environmental harm and injustices, and the often difficult bodily and psychological responses that result. To make sure these stay centered, one of the ground rules of Climate Café GR is to respect each other’s lived experiences and to engage from a place of love and goal of liberation.
